Call for Submissions
Submissions: Faculty, graduate students, undergraduates, and independent scholars from anywhere in the world are invited to submit abstracts for the 2026 meeting of the South Carolina Society for Philosophy (SCSP). Proposals on any topic of philosophical interest are welcome.
The 2026 meeting will feature four different presentation formats:
-
Papers
-
Panels
-
Posters (undergraduate only)
Papers will be allotted twenty minutes for presentation with ten minutes of Q&A. Graduate students and faculty may submit anonymized abstracts of approximately 500 words. All papers and abstracts should include a title along with several keywords or categories into which the paper could fit on the program, if accepted.
Panels are pre-organized sets of three to five papers on a theme or topic. Each panel will be allotted ninety minutes, though the format is largely up to the panel organizer. For example, panels may include a round table discussion. A panel proposal should include an anonymized overview of the topic along with anonymized abstracts of approximately 300 words for each of the papers to be presented. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions!
Posters which will be displayed throughout the conference, are aimed at showcasing research from undergraduates in and around South Carolina. There will be designated poster presentation session, where authors will get a chance to present their work to other conference attendees. We will award a prize to the best poster, determined by a vote from all attendees. Undergraduates interested to participate in the program should submit papers of up to 3000 words anonymized for review.
All submissions for the SCSP should be emailed to the SCSP at SCSPhilosophy@gmail.com by January 15, 2026 and should indicate the presentation category include a title and a few possible categories into which the paper could fit on the program if accepted. In the body of your email, please indicate your name, institutional affiliation (if any), status (e.g., faculty, graduate student, etc.), contact information, and whether you wish your paper to be considered for a Boiled Peanut Award (see below).
Location: The joint meeting will be hosted by the South Carolina Philosophical Society at Furman University in Greenville, SC. Furman University is serviced locally by the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP), which is located about 30 minutes from the university by car. Conference attendees arriving by flight might also consider the Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), which is approximately 45 minutes away, or the Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), which is approximately 1 hour and 45minutes away. Additional information about lodging options near the conference venue will be communicated upon acceptance of your proposal.
Underrepresented Voices in Philosophy: The Society particularly encourages submissions from participants whose work or presence in the profession centers on historically underrepresented questions, themes, issues, figures, or methods of inquiry.
Prizes: The coveted Boiled Peanut trophy (along with a cash prize) will be awarded to the best poster from an undergraduate, the best paper from a graduate student (from any institution), and the best paper from a non-tenured faculty. Authors wishing to be considered for one of these prizes should indicate this in their submission email (see above). Faculty, independent scholars, and graduate students wishing to be considered for a prize should plan to submit an anonymized version of their full paper of approximately 3000 words to the SCSP (SCSPhilosophy@gmail.com) by February 15, 2026 (in addition to submitting an abstract by January 15, 2026).
